It is common for heaters to break during the winter, which is the worst time of year for this to occur. Precision Heating & Air offers emergency service appointments 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to ensure your family never has to go without heating for longer than necessary.

Possible Causes of No Heating

There are many reasons your heat may not be working, but here are some of the most common problems we encounter when repairing heaters for our customers.

Bad Furnace Blower Motor

Blower motors are fan motors, which circulate your furnace’s heated air into your home. When a blower motor breaks, it will feel like there’s no air coming from your home’s vents.

Blower motors are moving parts, which makes them more prone to wear over time. There are several ways a blower motor can fail, some of which include:

  • A short in the motor
  • A blown capacitor is a part that gives the motor torque so it can turn.
  • A broken resistor is a part that controls the fan’s variable speeds.

Oftentimes, blower motors become dirty, which causes them to burn out. Regular heating maintenance can keep your furnace running smoothly.

Bad Furnace Control Board Unit

Furnace control boards are the part of your heater, which tell the heat to turn on. Your home’s thermostat sends a signal to the heater’s control board, which says that the temperature in your home is too low.

The control board then ignites the furnace and keeps it running until the thermostat sends another signal indicating the desired temperature has been reached. When a control board fails, there will be no hot air coming from your vents.

If your home has no heating, some of the common problems we see with control board units include:

  • Blown fuses
  • Units, which aren’t providing enough voltage to the furnace igniter.
  • Control boards with bad draft inducer relays

Other Heating Problems

While your heating might still be working, you may notice problems with its performance.

Besides a consistently chilly house, there are other signs to look for when your heater is working improperly. If your heating system is between 12 to 15 years old, then it may be time to replace it. Say your annual heating expenses are higher than normal… it may be time to invest in a new heating system.

If your heater is making any abnormal noises such as banging, rattling, or hissing, that’s another sign something isn’t right. Also, if your system struggles to start or stay on, a repair might be needed.
