When your heater isn’t working and it’s cold outside, it can be incredibly frustrating. Unfortunately, this problem is more common than you may think.

At Precision Heating & Air, we help homeowners with repairs and installation of heating, venting, and air conditioning units. If your heater has stopped working all of a sudden, use these troubleshooting steps below.

Troubleshooting Steps for When your Heater Doesn’t Work

  1. Check Your Thermostat
  2. It may sound a bit silly, but sometimes your heater may not work because of your thermostat. Thermostats are complex systems and can be the culprit behind your heat not working. We recommend reading the manual and checking to see if your timer is set correctly.

You’ll also want to check your programmable thermostat’s batteries. If you see a low battery warning, replace the batteries with new ones to see if that will do the trick.

  3. Make Sure Your Furnace is Getting Power
  4. Take a look at your fuse box for any tripped circuit breakers. In some cases, this could indicate there is a bigger problem with your electrical system.

  5. Check Your Air Filters
  6. Check to make sure all the air filters in your ducts are clean and are the proper size for your system. You may not realize it, but some heating systems will stop working if the air filter gets dirty enough. This auto-shut-down feature is a safety measure to prevent your system from overworking.

  7. Inspect for Leaks
  8. If you have a room that was warm but is suddenly cold, you may have some sort of leak. We recommend having your ductwork checked to see if there are any holes or patches that may be leaking out hot air.
